Rainy days can affect our motherhood moods and be challenging when we find ourselves trapped indoors with kids. When we wake up in the morning my toddler asks “What are we doing today, mommy?” and this particular day it was forecasted to rain but I decided we would not let a dreary forecast, rain on our parade. Of course, rainy days can make it a little difficult with kids and these are not days I want to load the kids in the car and go anywhere if it’s not necessary. However, rainy days are great days for indoor activities and even better, we discovered the fun in going outside to play on a rainy day!
This particular rainy day (absolutely no thunder or lightning), I put Toddler E in his water shoes and his rain jacket and we headed outdoors. I’m pretty sure the neighbors thought we were crazy but this is life with a toddler and he gets cabin-fever just like I do. Also, I see the value in letting him be a kid and experience the natural beauty of life. Honestly, when inside all day, I eventually reach my limit of repeating “we are not at a playground, [throwing balls] is for outside play!” It seems there are so many times I’m a rule enforcer but this was a simple, unstructured opportunity to be carefree and play in the rain.
So here is my toddler’s recommended, tested, and approved list of activities to do outside on a rainy day:
1. Go outside (of course if it is safe to do so)!
2. Jump and splash in puddles
3. Play in the downspout water
4. Collect rocks (and wash them in the downspout water)
5. Spin with an umbrella
6. Feel the rain on your face
7. Dance in the rain
8. Sing in the rain
9. Collect water in a bucket
10. Paint the house with a paintbrush
Children seem to naturally be drawn to water and honestly playing in the rain was just plain fun! What are your favorite rainy day activities?
