We have lived in our new family home a little less than a year now. We have tackled a few projects that were at the top of our to-do list but we are still looking at rooms that are empty. Since we’ve moved in, we haven’t bought any furniture yet (we don’t joke with my mother-in-law about this topic because it really does drive her crazy)! But, we moved from a condo to our more spacious family home. And although it’s a hard realization…the promised money tree out back hasn’t started to produce much green yet. ;)
Buying furniture and home decor is so much more to me than just filling the space. I want to take time to find my home decor style and fill my home with my signature style. Instead of looking for more, more, more to add to our home, I want to focus on incorporating things we love. These are just a few tips to find your home decor style that I have learned to embrace as we take our time decorating our family home.
Tips to find your home decor style
Instead of starting out with formal names of decorating styles, which can be a bit restrictive, it often helps to first do some pondering about what you love and are drawn to in general. Once you’ve gathered enough information, you can look over your findings and come up with a creative name for the style that’s yours — pulling features from different looks is what makes a home your own.
There are many ways to do this from browsing through your favorite catalogs, take an online (or in person) tour of model homes because their decor is always on point or even browse your favorite furniture stores for ideas. I love looking at photos of furnished and decorated rooms and then creating my own look. The plan is to get inspired and then create!
Forget all the labels
Think about how you want your home to feel. Your answer to this question will affect what colors you should use in your home. Styles like boho chic, industrial modern, rustic charm, modern farmhouse, french cottage, vintage modern, etc. These styles don’t mean anything if you don’t reflect on what it is about these styles that you really enjoy and want to incorporate into your home.
Identify your style elements.
Look at the details of rooms that you like and write down what you like about it. For me, it was realizing I love elements of the farmhouse style that look so inviting and warm. I also realize I’m most drawn to neutrals with subtle splashes of color. I’ve pulled together a few items I found from each style to illustrate how these looks can be used solo or in combination to make a style all your own.
You can find all the following pieces at Zulily, which I believe provides a unique shopping experience for people in search of just the right item for their home. These pieces will help your home stand out while feeling comfortable and stylish.
- I love the detail and texture in this mirror. The color is soft enough that it will integrate with other styles but the details make it a charming piece on its own.
- The pop of color and pattern of this chair give it a modern feel but paired with some other traditional farmhouse decor pieces, it creates a style of its own.
- This traditional wooden console table is just perfect for an entry way. I would love to center this mirror above it and place some of the perfect accent pieces on top of it to create a warm and inviting feel.
- I’ve had my heart set on a boxwood wreath for some time now. It feels like such a simple piece but it brings the beauty of the outdoors inside and gives a garden-inspired style to your décor all year long.
