Planning a family-friendly trip to Virginia? Read these Great Wolf Lodge Williamsburg Tips for Families, where it’s a howling good time! This Virginia resort is completely geared towards families offering a plethora of activities in addition to the indoor water park.
Great Wolf Lodge provided us a complimentary weekend stay at the resort. All opinions are my own and this review is based on our experience.
Great Wolf Lodge Travel Tips for Families
Great Wolf Lodge, with locations across the United States, is an amazing place for a family-friendly vacation. We were invited as part of a Media Event but with a location only a couple of hours away, this Virginia resort was on our list of places to visit. The boys would squeal with excitement every single time they saw the tv commercials so it was a dream come true when we announced it was time to go. The boys told anyone who would listen about their trip to Great Wolf Lodge.
Great Wolf Lodge is well known for their indoor water park and they have locations throughout the U.S. (and one in Canada too). When you approach the resort, you can sense the woodlands theme. The log-cabin exterior sets the tone and as you walk into the lobby there is no mistaking the comfortable family-friendly ambiance. With its animated clock tower, wolves perched atop a fireplace, and smiling kids filling the lobby, there’s no doubt that Great Wolf Lodge focuses on family fun.
Our imaginative 6-year-old was absolutely convinced that he created the Great Wolf Lodge “city” with his Lincoln Logs and this was his dream come true when he saw “his creation” in real life. I could have melted when he shared that with me.
Great Wolf Lodge is a one-stop vacation spot for families with kids. In addition to the water slides at the indoor water park, there are restaurants, a spa (geared to both adults and kids), interactive game experiences for children and teens, storytelling, kids clubs, and other amenities. It feels safe and cozy and just a fantastic place to be with your family. So let’s get to it – what do you need to know before you visit Great Wolf Lodge?
What’s Included In Your Stay?
The resort offers both indoor waterpark fun and dry-land adventures for the entire family. Your stay includes access to the waterpark, kept warm at 84-degrees year-round. Access is always exclusive to the guests for shorter lines and non-stop fun. There’s something for everyone such as kid-friendly activities, a range of dining options, an adult-friendly wine down service, and more all under one roof.
Great Wolf Lodge has no shortage of actives you can do at no additional cost! Activities vary depending on location and season, but there is always something going on. These are usually a part of the experience:
- The Great Clock Tower Show
- Seasonal Crafts
- Character Meet and Greets
- Dance parties
What Else is Offered At The Resort?
Although the water park is the main attraction, there are so many other features at the resort. There is an outdoors rope course which is open seasonally. There is also MagiQuest, an XD Theatre, a bowling alley, an outdoor miniature golf, an arcade and the creation station where kids can build their own Great Wolf character. There are additional charges for these activities but I’d recommend checking out the Paw Pass Packages for savings.
Bundled passes offer a variety of activities, treats, and adventures at a discounted price. These passes include options like Creation Station stuffed animals and games, MagiQuest wands and games, candy, ice cream, arcade points, and more. I recommend families explore the passes online before check-in
Details About the Attractions and Activities
Great Wolf Lodge’s sit down restaurant, The Loose Moose Bar & Grill offers a gourmet breakfast buffet, lunch and a dinner buffet featuring a carving station, salad bar and lots of favorites for kids. If you spend a day in the indoor water park, it’s convenient to grab lunch at Buckets Incredible Craveables. You can also order pizza takeout from Hungry as a Wolf.
I found the breakfast buffet to be a great value and there were so many options to satisfy everyone and then our tummies were full for most of the day. The boys were often too exhausted at the end of the day for a sit-down meal so we ordered a pizza to take back to the room from Hungry as a Wolf. We also had a bag of snacks from home and drinks in the room for the boys to enjoy.
Indoor Water Park
With a constant 84-degree temperature, even in the winter, getting soaked is a blast! Our Virginia indoor water park has features including play areas for toddlers, slides families can ride together, an awesome surf simulator, a wave pool, and so much more. Everybody loves the water park, so you’re sure to go into overtime in this pool of family fun.

Great Wolf Lodge also offers a MagiQuest interactive attraction. The extra-charge experience immerses players in a high-tech, multi-player fantasy environment that is somewhat like a walking video game. This was definitely a highlight at the resort. The younger kids are thoroughly entertained waving their wands at all the interactive elements in the hallways and then older children (and adults) can set off on a quest.
You can take your wand home and continue your adventure on your next trip to Great Wolf Lodge. For kids age five and under, Mini Magi Mode provides all the magic of MagiQuest but in a game that is specifically designed for younger Magi to explore and experience throughout the lodge.
Holidays are also extra special at Great Wolf Lodge. Every year, they celebrate “Howl”-o-Ween, Snowland winter “howl”idays and Springest with extra special activities, crafts, themed-dining, and more.
We had the absolute pleasure to experience the lodge decorated for the winter season. The resort transforms your stay into a winter wonderland with a life-size gingerbread house and nightly snow showers in the Grand Lobby. With so many festive, free events taking place each day, there’s plenty of fun for the whole pack!
Our boys were absolutely amazed by the snow showers the two nights we were at the resort. They were also so excited to see Santa in the lobby available for photos. Each weekend during the Snowland season, Santa Claus visits so it’s a perfect time to get those annual photos with Santa.

The boys woke up on the day of departure and announced, “I want to live here forever!” You know it was one of their best vacations when they ask repeatedly for us to turn the car around on the way home. I assured the boys that we will return!
